Al Gore’s Current TV which relies in part on citizen journalism, just posted a pretty amazing collection of interviews with writers, filmmakers, and radio people that’s worth checking out. Everyone from Robert Redford to that guy Jonathan Cauoette who made Tarnation (which I still have to see). All of the advice is intended for newbies interested in contributing “pods” to the cable channel, but is really relevant to what we all do in radio. Particularly if you’re an independent working completely alone most of the time and have that feeling on occasion that you have no idea what you’re doing. A lot of the advice simply boils down to, “just get out there and do the work.” Informative, inspirational, and maybe the only time you’ll hear Ira Glass say, “You will be fierce, you will be a warrior.”
And speaking of things to watch. I was really skeptical of the new McSweeney’s project Wholphin, but it has at least two great pieces worth picking it up for. Both short documentaries. One about Al Gore shot by Spike Jonze during the 2000 election and a clip of “Soldier’s Pay” by David O. Russell – a true story about Iraq that mirrors the plot of Russell’s Three Kings. The DVD is free with the current issue of The Believer.
(Screen grabs above are L-R Ira Glass, Dave Eggers, Jonathan Cauoette, and Xeni Jardin who posted about Current TV over at Boing Boing).
