In Between the Movies
Thursday August 18, 2005

Recently I realized that much of the work I’ve done and stories I’m interested in pursuing fall into a kind of theme. Many are stories about people who can’t quite figure out where they belong. People sort of stuck between two worlds who just can’t find a place that feels comfortable and right. Some place that makes sense. It’s not anything official, but I’m announcing the series I’m calling In Between anyhow. The first of these stories is airing this weekend on Weekend America.

Mark Noller is the regular organist at Chicago’s Music Box Theatre. If you live in Chicago, you’ve certainly seen and heard him play. Felt buoyed by those fat organ tones. Marveled at the way he plays out of the credits seamlessly. But Mark also has another theatre he plays at. A replica of the Music Box he built in his 600 square foot garage in the south suburbs. He’s old enough to have seen many of the old movies palaces in their heyday. And young enough that he’s still around to watch them disappear. Tune in to these stations or online this weekend. The show usually posts audio to their Web site on Saturday afternoons.
